Suncor Shuts Hydrocracker at Sarnia Plant After Fire (Update1)

      By Paul Burkhardt

Oct. 12, 2009 (Bloomberg) — Suncor Energy Inc. said a compressor fire yesterday shut a hydrocracker at its Sarnia oil refinery in Ontario.

Steps were taken to take the hydrocracker out of service, as a result of the event, said Sneh Seetal, a spokeswoman for Suncor, in a telephone interview.

There was a fire in a compressor at the plant, said Bryan VanGaver, acting platoon chief of the Sarnia fire rescue service. On-scene crews had the blaze under control when a team arrived after responding to a call early yesterday, he said.

Supply impact of this event is not expected to be material at this point, Seetal said.

The refinery has a capacity of 80,000 barrels a day, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The company in late 2007 completed a $1 billion investment to improve the plants capacity to handle synthetic crude from its oil sands operations.
