We utilize rail cars for our coke handling.  Coke is drilled directly in rail cars and then pushed down the track where water drains out the bottom of the cars onto the track.  Over time our rail tracks have sunken due to water and coke fine accumulation on the tracks.  This may be due to rail ties rotting out due to the water and coke.  Adjoining concrete blocks that we had in place had to be removed in most areas due to coke fines and water getting under them and floating them up.  We have numerous problems with unlevel tracks, loose rails, etc.  One of my coworkers heard someone at the coking.local seminar that we attended talk about some sort of padding that can be placed under the tracks and also some different types of rail ties that would not rot or be resistant to rotting.  Any ideas or advise would be appreciated?

If you are going to drain the railcars on the track (great idea), you will need to install a subsurface drainage system and concrete ties would be better if you want to continue to use ballasted track.  The problem that you have is that the coke fines will clog the ballast and impede the flow of water to the drains.  The best manner to permanently resolve this issue is to fix the rails to a reinforced concrete slab designed for rail loading.  The slab can be sloped to a central or exterior channel that captures the water and fines and carries it to your treatment facility.  The channel can have basins/traps for settling the fines so that they do not get to your drain system.  We have built similar track slabs/drains at fueling and other facilities and can help you with a design solution to this problem if you like.   Ed  info@trans-consult.com.mx
