      Catalytic cracking for olefins production at Japanese ethylene facilities likely to gain

      Asahi Kasei Chemicals has started production of ethylene and propylene at its Mizushima works in June 2006, utilizing its proprietary zeolite catalyst based Omega Process, which uses C4 and C5 raffinates as feedstocks. C4 and C5 raffinates are byproducts of petrochemical refineries in June 2006.
      Nippon Oil is carrying out pilot trials to commercialize the high severity fluid catalytic cracking (HS-FCC) technology at its main technical research laboratory in Yokohoma. The process, developed in collaboration with Saudi Aramco, increases the material output of propylene to 25% from 5% with standard FCC process.
      Adoption of the catalytic cracking process for olefin production at Japan’s ethylene facilities will most likely step up, replacing conventional naphtha cracking.
      Refineries are advancing efforts to enhance FCC to devise a heavy oil cracking method for bulk manufacture of petrochemical feedstocks. A major Japanese chemical maker is also developing technology to employ a catalyst in naphtha cracking that will enable selective ratio of naphtha fractions.
