Big West Flares After Power Disruption at Refinery (Update2)

March 4 (Bloomberg) — Big West of California LLC, a unit of
Flying J Inc., said its coker unit shut after a power disruption
at the company’s refinery in Bakersfield, California.
Other units are in recirculation mode and are “coming up
right now,” Bill Chadick, the plant’s health, safety and
environment manager, said in a telephone interview. The shutdown
“should have no impact on our ability to continue to produce
gasoline and diesel.”
The power outage affected the smallest of three areas in the
refinery, representing less than 20 percent of the plant, Chadick
said.
About 500 pounds of sulfur dioxide was released, and crews
were working to curb emissions, the company said in a filing
yesterday with the California Office of Emergency Services.
Flying J. is a closely held operator of refineries in Utah
and California.
The Big West refinery in Bakersfield has the capacity to
process 68,000 barrels of crude oil into gasoline and diesel a
day, according to U.S. Energy Department and company data.
