BP Carson, California, Refinery Shuts Hydrocracker After Fire
      2008-04-11 12:49 (New York)
      By Robert Tuttle
           April 11 (Bloomberg) — BP Plc, Europe’s second-largest oil
company by market value, shut a 45,000 barrel-a-day hydrocracker
after an overnight fire at the Carson, California, refinery
      , a
person familiar with the plant’s operations said.
The shutdown will probably not last longer than the
      weekend,
said the person, who declined to be named. The fire
damaged the seal on a compressor for the unit, which upgrades
distillate fuel into high quality gasoline, jet fuel or diesel.
There were no injuries or “significant environmental
      impact” from the fire,
Scott Dean, a company spokesman, said in
      a telephone interview.
The Carson refinery, the second-largest in California, is
able to process 265,500 barrels of oil a day, according to the
U.S. Energy Department. Chevron Corp.’s El Segundo refinery is
      the state’s largest.
