Does anyone have issues with a high solids content in their heater feed?  What do you do about it?  Strainer baskets that can be switched online?  Clean out during each decoking event?  Live with it?

It depends on the solids content and size.  If the solids are coke partices (1/8″ and larger) that are carried over from the drums – yes a bottoms coke fines removel system works well.  This type of system will keep your fractionator clean but the very small coke fines will work their way to the heater. There is nothing you can do to remove them – live with it. They can/do contribute to the fouling rate on the heater tubes.

I have seen very high solid content (clay) in coker feeds and this will cause the heater to foule faster. It also does not always foule in the radiant section of the heater. Not much can be done here as well.  If this is needle coke then the FCC fines must be removed, for coke quality issues.
