    Thanks for your response,

We were able to bypass and open up the Gas Absorber for inspection of the trays; found Significant Fouling and plugging on at some of the bottom trays, possible due to Contaminants in System/Solution, Heat Stable Salts and degradation in Amine Products.
A combination of High Soluble Iron with very high Coker gas absorber Inlet H2S Concentration Yields Iron Sulfide which lead to corrosion, plugging of the trays causing foaming and flooding in my Coker Gas absorber.

I agree with blowing the feed line with steam prior to closing the drum, which is a very good practice we have developed over the years at our Coker.

Keeping the quench water running into the inlet line during drilling would only work if you have individual quench water controllers for each of your coke drums. Usually on a 4 drum Coker you have 2 drums coking, 1 quenching while the other is being drilled.

Thanks for the information; the device is a Rosemount 5600 series

    Applications:
The Rosemount 5600 uses state-of-the art microwave technology to get highest reliability and precision. It measures the level of liquids, slurries, and solids. The transmitter operates in a wide range of temperatures, pressures, vapor gas mixtures, and various process conditions. (We are already using the series in the tank field and it has been very reliable so far).

The plan is to perform the job under Fresh Air (full face supplied air w/ escape pack-protection for vapors), bunker gear (jacket, overalls, boots) protection from heat, Full body harness and tie off – protection from falling. I plan on using 2 cranes, (1) to station the new manway with device and all gaskets ready to install approximately 10ft from the workers and (1) crane to lift the old manway off the tank.
The N2 supply is on pressure control to the tank and an additional amount of N2 will be added to maintain a positive pressure and prevent air from entering the manway. I am working with the Safety & Fire dept to address any concerns.

Please advice on any Safety concerns or potential hazards.

    1. We run 20 sometime 18hrs cycles and have to be very carefull when un-heading beacause we produce 100% shot Coke
    2. After 14hrs, what type of bottom un-heading system are you running/using?
    3. What are your heater COT’s.
    4. What type of Coke are you’ll producing?

We have the ability to route directly to the surge drum or to a storage tank, depending on the run the hydrotreater is on.

I think there is a  potential of plugging the top of the drum by closing/plugging the channels created when the drum was steam-stripped, and reducing or effecting how the drum cools. Since the top of the drum would not be as hot as the drum inlet, you can end up with mud on-top of your coke bed which can become a safety issue if you get a blow out when un-heading or cutting.

You can have the pit crane operator clean the fines in-front of basin, then put some fresh coke fines to the front to help filter the fines out.
The crane operator can then clean the basin fines collector 2 to 3 times a week. That’s what we do at our coker.
