This is, or was, the name for RPA (formerly Ronningen-Petter) filter systems. These are banks of tubes mounted on manifolds that usually have a 3 or 4 valves to switch from filtering to backwashing. Similar to Nowata ProGuard and Durco built some of these in the past as well.

And yes, these were primarily installed with wedgewire filter media.

Questions for you: 1) How many tubes and what is the micron rating of the elements in your Ronningen Petter filter? 2) What is the temperature and flow rate of liquid to this system?
It would seem to me off the cuff that the current filter would backwash more frequently. You may want to shorten the time between backwashes to get a more consistent feed rate to the hydrocracker. But since your current filter normally needs 3-5 vessel volumes each to properly clean, you will have more backwash liquid to deal with.
We are replacing such systems with gas-assisted backwash filters that use sintered powder media nominally rated in low single digits. Suggested operating temperature is between 450-550F. This should prevent the asphatenes from binding to the media.
If there is consideration of replacing the current filter, we can provide lab analysis and a feasibility study. The initial capital costs are high by operating costs are minimal.

You also may need to have the elements professionally cleaned. I can send you some information on cleaning and companies that clean sintered metal filter media.

Pollard Industries, LLC and Dahlman have introduced a new Fourth Stage Seperator (FSS) design for the removal of catalyst fines from FCC Flue Gas coming from the 3rd Stage Seperator. Let me know if you need more details. Our number is 1-866-813-3507.
 
Dahlman also has systems in operation filtering FCC Slurry Oil, and we have been working on applications for the filtration of feedstocks to hydrotreater and hydrocracker to prolong catalyst bed life.
